Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton to speak at first Fall Job Club session

A presentation by Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton, a 1971 UK College of Nursing graduate, kicks off the 2019 fall Central Kentucky Job Club slate. Join Mayor Gorton as she shares her intriguing career path and gives an update on the city’s economic and employment scene at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10.

The fall Job Club schedule is full of sessions that will benefit job seekers at any stage. The lineup of talented and engaging speakers will lead sessions on everything from job search strategies and resumes, to finding employment after 50 and keeping a sense of humor while job searching. Throughout the fall there will also be opportunities for free professional headshots and resume critiques.

The University of Kentucky Alumni Association, Fayette County Cooperative Extension Services and UK Human Resources Staff Career Development have scheduled seven meetings for Job Club this fall. The purpose of the Central Kentucky Job Club is to provide a positive environment for motivated job seekers to meet, connect, share and learn. The free group is open to the public and meets the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at the Fayette County Cooperative Extension Services office, 1140 Harry Sykes Way, Lexington, Kentucky. Business attire is encouraged. Convenient, free parking is available.

Job Club is for you if you are motivated and currently out of work, underemployed or looking to make a career transition. In addition, recruiters and employers are always welcome and introduced to Job Club attendees. Sept. 24
A Crash Course in Job Search Strategies — Presented by Diane Kohler, manager, UK Human Resources Staff Career Development, Caroline Francis, director of UK Alumni Career Services and Amanda Schagane, associate director, UK Alumni Career Services. Free professional headshot photos will be taken immediately following Job Club for attendees.
Fall is a great time to step up your job search. Join our nationally certified career counselors as they share tips for the job search and answer your burning questions. Bring your job search-related questions for this session.

Oct. 8
Target Your Resume — Presented by Caroline Francis, director of UK Alumni Career Services,  and Amanda Schagane, associate director, UK Alumni Career Services
This presentation will help the audience build a solid resume foundation, review preferred resume formats and target your resume/skills to the specific position using keywords and highlight your accomplishments by capturing the keywords of the job posting.

Oct. 22
Building a Foundation for Success: How to Ace Your Interview — Presented by April Spellman, corporate recruiter, Gray Construction. Free resume critiques will be held immediately following Job Club for attendees.
In this presentation attendees will learn tips and tricks to help ace an interview. From the application process all the way through the last interview, this session will help interviewees gain the knowledge and confidence to get the job.

Nov. 12
Writing Your Way to Your Next Opportunity — Presented by Amanda Lawrence, lecturer/course coordinator, UK Instructional Communication and Research
The focus of this presentation will be impression management. We will discuss tips for writing and revising cover letters and resumes, as well as how to utilize social media to your advantage.

Nov. 26
Finding Employment After 50 — Presented by Diane Kohler, manager, UK Human Resources Staff Career Development
This session will examine some of the challenges faced by job seekers who are 50+ years old as well as explore actions and strategies that can help meet them.

Dec. 10
Keeping Your Sense of Humor in the Ups and Downs of a Job Search — Presented by Mike Nichols, licensed psychologist and retired professor of psychology
During a tough time, laughter and a sense of humor doesn’t fix everything but it sure helps! Mike will explore the uses of humor and how it can help us thrive and stay positive in the midst of a job search. He will also suggest some practical everyday strategies to use humor in a beneficial way. And hopefully you and he will have some laughs along the way.

Snow Policy: If Fayette County Public Schools are closed or on a delay, Job Club will not meet.
