Graduates Since the 1960s Celebrate at Black Alumni Reunion

Over the weekend of April 11-13, the University of Kentucky Alumni Association proudly hosted the second annual UK Black Alumni Reunion in Lexington, Kentucky. Collaborating with the Office for Institutional Diversity, the Commonwealth Institute for Black Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences, and the J. David Rosenberg College of Law, it was a joy-filled event that brought together generations going all the way back to the 1960s.

This year was particularly special as it marked the 75th anniversary of Lyman T. Johnson’s pivotal court case, which opened the University of Kentucky to Black students in 1949. Johnson’s legacy continues to resonate throughout the campus, and the reunion served as a testament to his enduring impact. The reunion was packed with a range of activities and events that gave space for Black alumni to participate in important dialogue, hear from noteworthy alumni, rekindle old friendships, and make new connections.

• Pioneers for Progress Welcome Reception and Panel Discussion: An evening of socializing and reflection, highlighting the rich history of racial integration at the Rosenberg College of Law and examining its significance for the university’s past, present, and future. Judge Brian Edwards moderated the panel which featured Dr. Ricky Jones, Dr. Derrick White and Judge Melissa Moore Murphy.
