Alumni, Students Recognized as Lyman T. Johnson Award Winners

The 32nd annual Lyman T. Johnson Awards saw 38 alumni and students honored during a luncheon held Friday, Oct. 13 at the Gatton Student Center on the University of Kentucky campus.

UK’s academic colleges and units select at least one African American alum whose faith, hard work and determination has positively affected the lives of people on the UK campus, the city, state or nation to receive the Lyman T. Johnson Torch of Excellence Award. Additionally, one African American student within the college or department whose academic achievement and ability to impact the lives of others is selected to receive the Lyman T. Johnson Torch Bearer Award.

Three students earned scholarships through the Lyman T. Johnson Endowed Scholarship Fund, which provides assistance to students of color in pursuit of higher education. Caitlyn Bowman, Aminah Darden and Timika Scarlett earned a scholarship for the 2022-2023 academic year.

Lyman T. Johnson was a pioneer who challenged the status quo in his landmark court case which opened the University of Kentucky to African American students in 1949. He dedicated his life to fighting against segregation and racial inequalities in Kentucky.

The UK Alumni Association Lyman T. Johnson African American Alumni Constituency Group and the UK Office for Institutional Diversity hosted the awards luncheon.
